SHINGLE SPRINGS — The Ponderosa High soccer team ended a long season Wednesday in front of enthusiastic fans who endured the cold to watch the Bruins play Jesuit to wrap up the Delta River League schedule.

Despite an early deficit, the nationally-ranked Marauders, who were 26-0 going in, left Shingle Springs with their

perfect record intact after a 6-2 win.

Ponderosa celebrated Senior Night in its last home game, honoring Ben Boocks, Jesse Williams, Joe Reis and David Richman. The four were acknowledged at halftime with a round of applause by fans and parents.

The Bruins were the underdog Wednesday and they knew it — facing a Jesuit squad that averages five goals a game.

“Win or lose, I am looking to have fun tonight. It’s the last game of my high school career and I want to go out having fun,” Boocks said.

Ponderosa didn't play like an underdog at the start. Bruin freshman Dalton Pando broke across the middle, beat two Jesuit defenders to the ball and nailed it past the keeper into the top right corner in the 10th minute.

Another Ponderosa goal by Josh Holbrook gave Ponderosa a 2-0 lead and left fans screaming, players pumped and the Bruins, with a two-goal lead, in the driver's seat.

But the elation was short-lived as the Marauders found their offense with 15 minutes left in the first half. Behind multiple goals from Conte Kolokotronis, Matt Wiesenfarth and one from Andrew Young, Jesuit scored five times before halftime for a 5-2 lead. The visitors had the momentum and silenced the crowd.

The Marauders played keep-away in the second half and controlled possession nearly the entire 40 minutes. The Bruins put together several nice runs led by Williams and Pando but came away empty.

On the other end of the field, Jesuit kept up its attack and scored again late in the game. Ponderosa goalie Matt Aguiar was kept busy with 15 saves on the night — most on diving stops against the prolific Jesuit offense.

“This was my last game and I just wanted to have a good time. It was my last game in high school so of course it was a lot of fun for me,” Williams said.

Ponderosa ended the season with an overall record of 4-7-3 and 2-5-3 in the DRL.
